CSR Minute January 21, 2010: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Microcredit Grants; INFACT Global Partners' New CSR Compliance Service

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded $38 million dollars to 18 credit groups in 12 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The grants, given after a yearlong review by the philanthropy, are intended to expand its development work in the microfinance area into microsavings. Studies show that encouraging savings, even among the rural poor, increases investment in education, raises productivity and income, and reduces vulnerability to unexpected events. Recipients of the grants include ShoreBank International, Accion International, and Women’s World Banking.

INFACT Global Partners has launched a new service for small and medium-size companies sourcing products from China. The Managed CSR Support Program makes it possible for those companies who cannot afford staffing their own office in China to have a local resource to advise them about CSR practices on site. INFACT will provide local and experienced personnel embedded in factory improvement teams in Shanghai or Guangzhou offices to ensure supply chain compliance and meet the standards of brand and retail customers.
